What a magnificent month June was, on Monday 18th June CILIP announced the winners of the Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals. This year the panel of esteemed judges selected Canadian illustrator Sydney Smith as the 2018 winner of the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal for his collaboration with Joanne Schwartz Town is by the Sea Published by Walker Books.
Town is by the Sea written by Joanna Schwarz and illustrated by Sydney Smith has a gentle pace, written with a sparse expressive text open to infinite interpretations, as are all the very best picture books. Illustrated throughout with unrivalled luminescence the deft colour washes and spontaneous brush work join together to create both expansive landscapes and intimate beautifully observed domestic scenes in perfect harmony.
The use of colour and the magical almost realist representation of light instantly transport the reader to the brackish and beautifully barren far reaches of Canada. This is a profoundly moving picture book with all the hall marks of a forever classic. A true winner in every sense. Here are some photos from Sydney’s visit to the UK.
Sydney was a delight to accompany and made me remember every second why working in Childrens publishing is the best, looking through his sketchbooks was an experience I’ll never forget. I’m really looking forward to working with Syd again, he’s a fiercely passionate talent to be watched with a very keen eye.
